related to H1N1 at 452-5195.Swine flu, or 2009 H1N1, emerged as a new influenza virus in April 2009. Swine flu spreads quickly from person to person in much the same way as seasonal influenza. Most people who have become ill with this virus have recovered without requiring medical treatment. Symptoms include fever, sore throat, headache, cough, body aches, chills and fatigue. Some people may also have diarrhea and vomiting. H1N1 vaccine is expected to be available in very limited amounts late in the fall and initially only to select target groups.
The vaccination effort is expected to take several months as additional vaccine becomes available. The Trumbull Monroe Health District strongly encourages everyone to adopt the following preventive behaviors:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- If you get sick with influenza, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
- Stay informed!
